The Scouring Of The Shire

Hobbits vs. Saruman? It happened, and now you can relive these experiences in this new suppliment.

Note: This is a suppliment that I've been wanting to create for some time. I've mainly been doing this with MS Word, but figure I can throw it up here and finish this on my Wiki site. The Word document is really cool, formated to look like an actual suppliment from GW, i.e. it has images, double columned, etc. But doing it this will allow me to upload things as I complete them and even have the community-at-large playtest some of the scenarios.

At the end of it all, I'll take our data and put it back into the Word document and let people use that if they will, as it will look nicer. But for now, this will be the best way to "develop" the suppliment.

  • Introduction

Hobbits, and the Shire itself, were involved during some of the great battles in Middle Earth, including the War of the Ring. In the early days the Shire had to defend itself against wolves and goblins during the great winter. They were even enlisted by on of the Kings of Arnor during the their wars at the battle of Fornost.

    Special Rules

Any special rules would be listed out here. I don’t know of many, maybe some rules for the orcs during early-Shire days, also maybe something about Hobbits and their courage once raised, etc.

Maybe something about Hobbits and Ponies?

Perhaps something about the Took arrows. There was an interesting rule on TLA about arrows being effective at short range, crap at long range...

    The Free Peoples

Use this list to choose a Good force to the points value you have agreed with your opponent.

    Heroes

    Frodo Baggins

Frodo Baggins (Hobbit) Points Value: 65
    FSDAWC
    3/-+ 2 3 1 2 6
    Might: 3
    Will: 3
    Fate: 3

Frodo has completed his quest to destroy the Ring of Power and is returning home, only to find out that the evils of Mordor have stretched this far West.

    Special Rules

Resistant to Magic.Hobbits are naturally resistant to the influence of magic and the will of others. If a Hobbit attempts to resist a magical power with his Will and fails to roll the required score then he can re-roll the dice. This gives a second chance of success – but note that only one re-roll is allowed – you cannot re-roll a re-roll.

Sting.String is a magical blade that shines with a blue light when Orcs are near. When Frodo carries Sting he adds +1 to his Strength characteristic, giving him a Strength value of 3.

Mithril Coat.Mithril is a special metal that is as light as a feather, and as hard as dragon scale. The wearer’s Defense value is increased by +3, in Frodo’s case from Defense 3 to 6.

Elven CloakIf the wearer is partially concealed from view he cannot be seen at all at distances of more than 6”/14cm – the wearer appears to melt into the background. This means that enemy archers can not shoot at ranges of greater than 6”/14cm unless they have a completely clear view of the target. If the model is riding a mount, the cloak has no effect.
    Wargear

Frodo carries a blade given to him by Aragorn (hand weapon). At an addition points cost Frodo can be given the following items of wargear. He can only carry Sting or wear his Mithril coat if Bilbo is not included in the force (rules for Bilbo can be found in The Fellowship of The Ring edition of The Lord of the Rings game).

    Sting15 pts
    Mithril Coat25 pts
    Elven cloak10 pts

    Sam Gamgee

Sam Gamgee (Hobbit) Points Value: 30
    FSDAWC
    3/-+ 2 3 1 2 5
    Might: 1
    Will: 1
    Fate: 2

Sam is Frodo’s stalwart companion and loyal friend, and gardener to boot. Like his master, Sam comes to discover reserves of courage quite unexpected in a normally placid Hobbit. The destruction of the Shire’s beauty has the most affect on Sam, fueling his passion to free his fellow Hobbits.

    Special Rules

Resistant to Magic.See Frodo’s description for more details.
    Wargear

Sam carries a blade given to him by Aragorn – but he prefers to wield a hefty saucepan (both count as hand weapons). At an additional points cost Sam can be given the following item of wargear:

    Elven cloak10 pts

    Meriadoc Brandybuck

    Meriadoc Brandybuck(Hobbit) Points Value: 10
    FSDAWC
    3/0+ 2 3 1 1 4
    Might: 0
    Will: 0
    Fate: 1

Meriadoc Brandybuck, like his good friend Peregrin Took, has grown immensely over the past year on his adventure, particularly after drinking some of the Ent Draught. He is a Rider of Rohan, Guard of the King, and can be quite fearsome when blowing his horn.

    Special Rules

Resistant to Magic. See Frodo’s description for more details.

Horn of Rohan. Given to Merry as a gift from Eomer in honor of his service, the Horn of Rohan can drive fear into the hearts of the enemy, and at the same time lift the courage of all friends nearby. For one Might, at the start of the turn before the Move phase, Merry can blow his horn. All friendly models within 6”/12cm are considered Terrifying (see the rules on courage for more details).
    Wargear

Merry carries a blade given him by Eomer in honor of his service to Rohan during the War of the Ring. At an additional points cost Merry can have the following wargear:

    Elven cloak10 pts
    Shield5 pts
    Rohan Horn10 pts

    Perigrin Took

Perigrin Took (Hobbit) Points Value: 10
    FSDAWC
    3/0+ 2 3 1 1 4
    Might: 0
    Will: 0
    Fate: 1

Perigrin Took, commonly called Pippin, is a great friend and companion of Merry, and has grown just as much on this adventure. He is a Knight of Gondor, albeit on leave, though King Elessar can recall him at a moment’s notice.

    Special Rules

Resistant to Magic. See Frodo’s description for more details.

Gondor Armor. Pippin received this armor after being sworn in to service. If included, it raises his defense by +2. So his total defense would be a 5, instead of a 3.
    Wargear

Pippin carries a blade given to him by Aragorn (hand weapon) which he calls Troll Bane, in reference to his slaying a Troll with it in the battle before the Black Gates. At an additional points cost Pippin can have the following wargear:

    Elven cloak10 pts
    Gondor Armor10 pts

Bill The Pony Points Value: 5
    FSDAWC
    0/0+ 3 3 0 1 4
    Might: 0
    Will: 0
    Fate: 1

Bill the Pony, named after Bill Ferny, was the companion of the Fellowship until they reached the Mines of Moria. He was released then, only to wander back to Bree where Sam and Bill were once again reunited. He follows the Hobbits back home now.

    Special Rules

Friend to Sam. When an enemy is within 1”/2cm of Bill and Sam Gamgee is in the good force, Sam will move towards that enemy during his movement phase. Sam’s courage is a 7 when charging an enemy that is within 1”/2cm of Bill, and when he is in battle he has a –1 to his attack roll, but a +1 to his wound roll (this represents his blind fury in defending Bill).
    Wargear

Being a Horse, Bill has no attacks and thus has no wargear.

Any Hobbit may choose to mount Bill as described in the rulebooks.

    Tom Cotton

    Tom Cotton Points Value: 35
    FSDAWC
    3/0+ 3 3 1 1 4
    Might: 1
    Will: 1
    Fate: 1

Farmer Cotton is a well respected man in Hobbiton and has been a source of resistance during this occupation of the Shire. He and his two boys are just waiting for the other Hobbits to crawl out of their shell and rebel. He is also the father of Rosie Cotton, Sam’s love.

    Special Rules

Resistant to Magic. See Frodo’s description for more details.
    Wargear

Farmer Cotton has no armor of note, but carries a pitchfork with great skill.

    The Thain, Paladin Took

    The Gaffer, Hamfast Gamgee

The Gaffer, Hamfast Gamgee Points Value: 5
    FSDAWC
    0/0+ 3 3 0 1 4
    Might: 0
    Will: 0
    Fate: 1

Gaffer Gamgee is Sam’s father and has been forced to work for The Chief for a while now.

    Special Rules

Resistant to Magic. See Frodo’s description for more details.

Friend to Sam. When an enemy is within 1”/2cm of the Gaffer and Sam Gamgee is in the good force, Sam will move towards that enemy during his movement phase. Sam’s courage is a 7 when charging an enemy that is within 1”/2cm of his father, and when he is in battle he has a –1 to his attack roll, but a +1 to his wound roll (this represents his blind fury in defending the Gaffer).
    Wargear

The Gaffer has no wargear of note, though is given a small knife (hand weapon) when Sam meets him.

    "Bullroarer" Took

Brandobas 'Bullroarer' Took (Hobbit) Points Value: 50
    FSDAWC
    4/2+ 3 4 1 2 6
    Might: 2
    Will: 1
    Fate: 1

'Bullroarer' Took is the largest Hobbit in the recorded history of the Shire. It is he that headed the defense of the Shire at the battle of the Greenfields against the invasion of the goblins from Mt. Gram.

    Special Rules

Resistant to Magic. See Frodo’s description for more details.

Throw Stone. If Bullroarer Took does not move at all during his movement phase, he may stoop to throw a stone. This works exactly like a crossbow except it is strength 1 and range of 8’.
    Wargear

Bullroarer wears light leather armor and carries a wooden club (counts as a hand weapon). At an additional points cost Bullroarer can have the following wargear:

    Horse10 pts

    Warriors

    Hobbit Villager

    Archers of Buckland

    Forces Of Darkness

    Heroes

    Bill Ferny

    Ruffian Captain

    Sharky

    Wormtongue

    Ted Sandyman

    Golfimbul

Golfimbul, King of Mt Gram Points Value: 65
    FSDAWC
    4/0+ 4 5 2 2 5
    Might: 3
    Will: 2
    Fate: 1

Golfimbul is the king of the cruel clan of goblins from Mt Gram.

    Special Rules

Fearless of Halflings. Because Golfimbul is so much larger than anything in the Shire, he never has to take a courage test to charge a halfling.

Iron Fist. When Golfimbul makes a 'stand fast' courage roll, the range is 12” rather than the normal 6”.
    Wargear

Golfimbul carries a long notched sword and may elect to use it with one or two hands in the fight phase, but he may not switch in the same phase. Golfimbul wears heavy armor.

    Warriors

    Ruffians

    Sherrifs (hobbits)

    Gatherers (men)

    Sneaks (hobbits)

    Scenarios

    Scenario 1: Brandywine Bridge

Note: Needs to be a “chase” scenario, maybe to kill Bill Ferny

Scenario 2: Sherrifs at (can't remember city name)

Not sure if I even want to keep this scenario, what would it be? Hobbits vs. Hobbits? How win? Kill ‘em all? (doesn’t sound very hobbitish)

    Scenario 3: The Ruffians

Small map, fight scenario. 20 Ruffians w/1 captain. Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin and Bill.

    Scenario 4: Rescue The Gaffer

“Rescue” scenario starting with Sam in the room w/Gaffer? w/5 Hobbits. 5 Ruffians chasing them, wins if Sam & Gaffer escape.

    Scenario 5: The Thain Hunt

Thain (riders?) w/bows have a group of Ruffians caught near the Hedge. Can escape in Old Forest (roll on chart to see if truly escapes).

    Scenario 6: Battle At Bywater

The big fight, probably the only true all-out war (i.e. reduce force to 25% to win). Scenery would be interesting.

Not sure if I want to bring out Saruman for this fight. It’s a tough choice, do what PJ did and alter the books for a better fight, or stay true to the books and keep him until the last scenario?

    Scenario 7: Sharky's End

Saruman would definitely be used here. This would be an “Escape” sort of scenario, with Saruman escaping the Shire. There might be some cool special rule about Wormtongue going mad and attacking Saruman. Ted Sandyman could be used here too.

Scenario 8: Clearing The West Farthing

An aftermath fight, a bunch of Hobbits maybe with Merry and/or Pippin hunting for Ruffians. They could be holed up somewhere for a “last stand”.

These two scenarios would be in a Part One, if we split the supplement into two sections, similar to Shadow and Flame.

Scenario 9: Battle At Greenfields part 1

These are early-Shire scenarios where the orcs and wolves attacked the Shire and Bullroarer Took invented the game of Golf.

Scenario 10: Battle At Greenfields part 2

    Another early-Shire scenario.

You could also do a lot more scenarios since this is pretty open to our imaginations (i.e. Tolkien never detailed this). If we want more, we could also bring in Dunadain men (they were around at that time). There’s also a fight at Formenost(?) that Hobbits contributed to in the mid-third age that could be included.

I love this whole idea. I wish it was in the movie.

    -Ranger
Feel free to add whereever you want. All I've done is examine that chapter in the books (Chapter 8 I think of book 6) and figure out what would make good models and scenarios. I've added the ideas behind the scenarios, what I'll probably do with them, but this is about as far as I've gotten.

    -Shnar Gru
I have taken the liberty to add a few characters to the supplement, even though they fit more into the 'greenfields' part. Also I was wondering what miniatures you used for the picture of Bill the Pony and The Gaffer. You may want to update the profiles of Merry and Pippin, as well as their points. Merry can use a might to blow the horn of Rohan, yet he has no might. I think this is inaccurate because the returned to the Shire as war-hardened heroes.

    -Elrond The Avenger
Perhaps Bill the Pony should be allowed some weargear. Example: Allow him to carry weapons so warriors can pick up weapons when in base contact with him. Possibly have him carry a shield, maybe an ax/pitchfork. Of course, once someone picked up a wepon he wouldn't have it any more until someone put it back so they wouldn't have to carry it.

Oh, and since he is a PONY, maybe he should have an 8 inch move value, as he is a small horse and definately not able to go as fast as a well bred horse of Rohan/Gondor?. Just a thought.

    -Patrick S

Some requests one don't make Bull Roarer that expensive. He should cost only 25 points. two don't make Sherrifs evil most of them joined the other hobbits. three include Tooks as the hobbit equivilent of elite troops (like Rohan royal gaurd or the Citidel Gaurd). Four when you make the hobbit archers give them a 3 acuracy and a 2 bow strenght but only a 12 range. I don't think they would have killed ruffians so easily if they had a 4 acuracy and a 1 bow strength. I hope you agree to this

    Wise Wanderer

--- Amazing, that must have took sooo long to do! UGLUK1000 *wishing the scouring of the shire was in the film*
That is So COOL!!! Are they actually gunna release this? Or is it just made up?

    Neix J
Both. This was a project I'd started but lost steam as RL cut into my gaming life. But, Games Workshop is creating a Scouring suppliment. It will be completely different from this one, and my guess is they will be so different that the two can exist side-by-side. If, that is, I ever find the time to actually complete this

    -Shnar Gru
Oh, and one other thing, whats the point of the Old Gaffer having a hand weapon if he doesn't have any attacks? Shouldn't he have at least one?

    Neix J
YEAH I AGREE WATS THE POINT

    -MACE

Same,I mean its a bit stupid to give him a hand weapon if he has no attacks

    -Whitehand

What's the thing next to "Golfimbul, King of Mt Gram" where the picture should be?

    STS
The strange image apparently used to point to an image on uploadit.org but was removed. Uploadit.org has an automated "image not found" image, that's what we're seeing. I don't know who's image it was (was never mine), but it's obviously old. We can simply remove it, though I did not want to until I had a better one.

As for the Gaffer's attacks, it will be explained in the Rescue scenario, if I ever get time to actually finish it.

    -Shnar Gru
Not to be picky, but Merrys rohan horn needs might to be blown, and merry has how much might? NONE.

    Neix J

I reckon Merry and Pippin should both have their stats from rotk or better to reflect that they have gotten better warriors, while they were in the fellowship. This would also let Merry use the horn of Rohan. Also prehaps you could create an extra rule for Sam and Bill the Pony, maybe if Sam spends a go in base to base contact with the horse, without being engaged in battle, sam could restore his might to its starting value.

    Just a few suggestions

Isn't this coming out from GW?
    Lasta Greyshield
    oxxx(::::::::::::::>

I had originally thrown up an image of Durburz for the Golfimbul profile....

    -Elrond The Avenger

reading through this again, it is alarming how similar this is to the GW version of the supplement. Shame this one never got finished.

    -Baruk Khazad
Thanks Baruk. I had lots of different ideas but just never had RL time to finish them

The one main idea for LotrWiki? was to have some unique aspects, something that set them apart from other Lotr sites, keeping people coming back. One was the BGi ME listing, another the White Dwarf listing. This supplement was going to be another, but never got done. Some of the scenarios though were going to be completely different, like the Gaffer rescue one. If RL ever eases up on me, I might try to finish it, maybe even submit to White Dwarf...

    -Shnar Gru
Yeah, its pretty much the same as the GW supplement. Just shows that great minds think alike hey Shnar Gru!
