Message Board/Stop Spammers

Edit this page (last edited November 6, 2006)

I can't tell you how much I hate spammers. Most are from overseas in the Chinese area. We can discuss here what we can do to prevent them:

1. First thing I did was to remove anonymous posts. Now you HAVE to have a Username set in your User Preferences or you cannot make any changes. That may deter some spammers but not many for very long I'm afraid. The one thing that I'm very afraid of with this is that what happens when someone just uses someone else's name? There's no protection there...

2. We can add a CAPTCHA page, which usually seems to work, but looking at the Open Wiki site (which now uses CAPTCHA) they're still getting spammed so maybe that's more trouble than it's worth.

3. Add Passwords. That I think will be the ultimate solution, requiring everyone to register with a password. Then if a registered user is spamming, I can simply block that account (and maybe even make "blocking" a programmatic thing so I can assign Moderators this power, such as Kaliska and The Precious, who have been really good at keeping spam attacks at bay).

I really do want to do the last, passwords, but I'm afraid that that is going to be rather intensive programming work on my side, which I really don't have the time to do right now

But let's wait and see. It's been a few days and none of the usual spams have happened yet, so maybe just removing anonymous posts is helping...

Wow, I think this is the first time in as long as I can remember that I've come to the site and not found spam to delete! Nice work Shnar

It seems to be working. It's not 100% foolproof though. It looks like the User Preferences page is getting spammed a lot, and the Change Page Name feature is not username enforced, so some people are abusing that as well. But it's definately a drastic improvement

Since we're having such a smaller amount of vandales right now, I'm a little more on top banning. I'm creating a new Banned Users page, where I will keep a list of all users and why they're banned.

I have to say ive found spamming has been rising recently.
