Message Board/The Character Macro

Edit this page (last edited January 29, 2004)

I like how the official rules have the characters laid out, with their F S A etc in a nice table of sorts. I can't figure out a good way to do this with plain Wiki, so I've created a custom macro for characters. It's really kludgy, but it works. You have to list this out in the proper order or else the resulting table will not work and you'll get a strange looking page.

To create a "character", use these commands:
Macro Name Parameter_1 Parameter_2 Description
CharacterStart Name Cost This starts the table as well as listing the name and cost for the character
CharacterFight Fight Range Fight and Range values, do not put a plus symbol of the Range.
CharacterStrength Strength n/a The strength of the character, only one parameter.
CharacterDefense Defense n/a The defense of the character, only one parameter.
CharacterAttack Attack n/a The attack of the character, only one parameter.
CharacterWound Wound n/a The wounds of the character, only one parameter.
CharacterCourage Courage n/a The courage of the character, only one parameter.
CharacterMight Might n/a Might for the character, this must be here, even if the character has no might (simply use a dash then)
CharacterWill Will n/a Will for the character, dash if nothing
CharacterFate Fate n/a Fate for the character, dash if nothing
CharacterSiegeWeapon Name n/a Optional Seige weapon listed as a table below the character's stats. Note that all "siege" macros must follow this of if this macro is used, but none should be used if this one is not used.
CharacterSiegeStrength Strength n/a The strength of the seige weapon.
CharacterSiegeDefense Defense n/a The defense of the siege weapon.
CharacterSiegeBatterPoints Batter Points n/a The batter points of the siege weapon.
CharacterDesc Description n/a A description of the character, will be shown in italics.
CharacterSpecialRuleTitle n/a n/a Optional Displays a bold, "Special Rules" title.
CharacterSpecialRule Name Description Optional should follow the CharacterSpecialRuleTitle? or another CharacterSpecialRule? macro, this lays out a bold Name and the Description next to it.
CharacterWarGear Description n/a A description of the Wargear for the character, also displays the bold Wargear title.
CharacterWeapon Name Cost Optional should follow the CharacterWarGear? or another CharacterWeapon? macro, lists the Name in bold and the Cost aligned right.
CharacterEnd n/a n/a closes the HTML table .

Here's a sample usage:

<CharacterStart(Mariners, 5)>
<CharacterFight(3,4)>
<CharacterStrength(3)>
<CharacterDefense(3)>
<CharacterAttack(1)>
<CharacterWound(1)>
<CharacterCourage(3)>
<CharacterMight(-)>
<CharacterWill(1)>
<CharacterFate(-)>
<CharacterSiegeWeapon(Bolt Thrower)>
<CharacterSiegeStrength(9)>
<CharacterSiegeDefense(10)>
<CharacterSiegeBatterPoints(3)>
<CharacterDesc("Mariners are expert sailors who sail around southern Gondor pillaging settlements and capturing enemy vessels for booty.")>
<CharacterSpecialRuleTitle>
<CharacterSpecialRule("Swingin in the Riggin.", "All mariners are experts at climbing, walking along narrow spars and leaping aboard enemy vessels. Mariners may re-roll any failed climb or jump test.")>
<CharacterWarGear("Mariners are armed with a cutlass (hand weapon). At additional cost they may be given the following equipment:")>
<CharacterWeapon("Boarding Pike", 2)>
<CharacterWeapon("Shield", 1)>
<CharacterWeapon("Banner", 25)>
<CharacterEnd>

Will create a Character like this:
MarinersPoints Value: 5
FSDAWC
3/4+ 3 3 1 1 3
Might: -
Will: 1
Fate: -

StrengthDefenseBatter Points
Bolt Thrower (9) 10 3

Mariners are expert sailors who sail around southern Gondor pillaging settlements and capturing enemy vessels for booty.

Special Rules

Swingin in the Riggin.All mariners are experts at climbing, walking along narrow spars and leaping aboard enemy vessels. Mariners may re-roll any failed climb or jump test.
Wargear

Mariners are armed with a cutlass (hand weapon). At additional cost they may be given the following equipment:

Boarding Pike2 pts
Shield1 pts
Banner25 pts

Some comments, this is really kludgey, but was the only way I could quickly create some nice looking characters for everyone to put up. In otherwords, anyone can use these macros. Part of it's kludgeness though is the fact that one macro starts some HTML code and another macro finishes it. That's why you have to list these macros in order, or else it will break the page.

The Siege Weapon was added as a special addition from the Hithero characters, we basically needed another table of data. You must put in Might/Will/Fate? (and in that order) or else it will break the table. I'm thinking about putting code in to check if the value is a dash, to not print the "Might" word. And lastly, if you need some additional, special stuff added for a character, let me know and I'll adjust the underlying code.

Otherwise, what do you think? Is it usable? I'm thinking about creating a special Character database that would just have a Form for all the character data, and then a macro with just one parameter, the CharacterName? to display it. That's gonna take a lot more work though, so don't know if I'll ever get around to it...

It works fine for me but, I would sugest every one to copy the MarinersīMacros and then changing the stats when writting the house rules because you can do them faster and itīs easy to forget a " or a ), ruining all the whole article (as it did several times with my Gaming/House Rules/Haradrim Knights one).

Yeah, good point. The sample character in this topic has all the current options listed, so it's probably best to just copy the whole thing, then remove out the different Macro's not needed.
